regarding the horse's age, condition, fitness, vaccinations, health records and veterinary
examinations as are reasonable.
4.3 Competition organisers and national governing bodies may make rules regarding the
inclusion of stallions as are reasonable.
4.4 Without prejudice to the above rules, horses with a known propensity to kick or bite
should be required to wear red or orange ribbons in their mane and/or tail.
HORSE WORKLOAD
4.5 A horse should have no more than 2 riders in a competition. A third rider is only
permitted in unpredictable circumstances a ter the competition has already started.
4.5.1 The daily workload for a horse is limited to 3 starts per day for 1- or 2-day
competitions, and 2 starts per day for competitions of 3+ days.
4.5.1.1 In unpredictable situations which arise a ter a competition has begun (e.g.
lameness of horse, inclement weather, etc.), it is possible for one further start to
be permitted by the Head Judge, with careful consideration of the fitness of the
horse, the local ground and weather conditions, and the duration of the whole
event.
4.5.1.2 Horses that are 4 or 5 years of age are limited to 2 starts in all cases,
regardless of any unpredictable situations which arise. Horses under the age of 4
are not permitted to compete.
4.5.2 In #4.5.1, "a start" is defined as the warm-up and competitive runs for one style
of event, for one rider.
4.5.2.1 There is no di ferentiation between styles with di ferent track length or
number of runs.
4.5.2.2 It is not permitted to go straight from one style to another without
dismounting and to thereby consider it as only "one start"
HORSE USE & ALLOCATION
4.6 A rider must use the same horse throughout the whole competition, unless the horse is
retired from the competition due to injury or if it becomes apparent that the rider is unsafe
on that horse.
4.6.1 It is possible for member associations to authorise an exemption to #4.6 in their
country, within 1*-2* single day straight-track competitions only, allowing a
competitor to take the 3rd permitted start (#4.5.1) on two di ferent horses.
[for example: 2 straight track events, 3 riders (1, 2, 3) and 2 horses (A, B) who are each permitted
3 starts according to #4.5.1. #4.6.1 allows: 1-A (both tracks), 2-B (both tracks), 3-A (one track) & 3-
B (other track)]
4.7 Those competitors who have not brought their own horse, or arranged a private hire or
lending of a horse, shall be allocated a horse by the competition organiser.
