Rules and standard competition procedures.
7.14 A nominated o ficial, in the judge's tent or a referee station near to the centre of the
track, should be tasked with keeping the safety lag. Competitors should know what the
distinctive lag looks like and where it will be kept. If there is any reason for the
competition to be halted for a safety concern the alarm should be raised visually, as well as
by shouting STOP.
7.14.1 The competitor should immediately stop shooting and slow down the horse to a
walk in a safe manner. If the safety concern is not caused by the competitor he should
be o fered an immediate rerun a ter the safety concern is resolved.
7.15 National associations may require for o ficials (particularly the Head Judge and
Track Marshal) to have completed organised training through the IHAA Judging training
programme. IHAA judge qualification is mandatory for the judges of 2*, 3* or 4*
competitions accredited to the IHAA. They must keep up to date with rule changes and
guidelines for best practice in managing di ficult decisions.
7.15.1 Where a head judge is lacking su ficient experience as a horseman they must
arrange a working partnership with a suitably qualified and impartial person who will
be present at the competition, to receive advice on any queries of fitness or lameness.
This must be arranged prior to the event.

8. The Track
8.1 A straight-track should be lat (with no significant undulations) and level (with neither
a significant incline start to finish, nor a marked camber / slope across the track). Any
incline, camber, slope or undulations must not cause safety concerns for the horses, any
incline must not disadvantage right- or le t-handed athletes.
8.1.1 Any change in height of ground level on a straight track should not be more than
90cm over 90m or 50cm over 45m
8.1.2 Leniency regarding incline is permitted in lower level competitions / grading
events as long as tracks are safe. Compliance to #8.1.1 is required for 2* competitions
and higher
8.2 Unless otherwise specified by the rules for a specific event, the track shall be 1.5-3m
wide and the boundaries of the track shall be clearly delineated, usually by a rope barrier or
raised earth.
8.3 The barrier should be constructed so that it is safe for both horse and archer and
e fective in keeping horses within the track.
8.3.1 If rope is used to mark the track then it shall be suspended in a way that does
not present a hazard to horses or riders. The suggested height is 50-80cm tall. Any
posts used for this purpose must not present a significant risk of injury to a horse or
