16.2 The IHAA Code of Equine Welfare must be supplied to competitors, o ficials, ground
crew and horse owners in advance of the competition, both in English and in the local
language.
16.2.1 All competitors must sign up to follow the IHAA Code of Equine Welfare
prior to the start of competition, either electronically or on paper.
16.3 Where a competition will include competitors riding hired horses or horses coming
to a venue that is unfamiliar; best practice is to provide a training day following horse
selection and prior to the competition. This will allow horses to become acclimatised to
the new environment and for new horse-rider combinations to become familiar with one
another.
16.4 Guidelines for best practice are that prior to a competition, eg. on the a ternoon
before / morning of competition, all horses should be presented in-hand and unsaddled. A
ground jury of 2-3 individuals (of appropriate experience, including a member of the
judging team and +/- a veterinarian; who have been appointed by the organiser) will
examine the horse at rest then observe it walking and trotting. More information is on the
IHAA website within the Welfare e-learning course.
The ground jury should check for: a) sores or injury, b) signs of illness, c) lameness, d) that
the horse is in an appropriate condition for ridden work. The ground jury may
recommend to the Head Judge that a horse is excluded from competition if they feel that
participating would compromise its health or welfare.
16.5 There must be a central information hub (eg. a noticeboard/whiteboard) where
competitors can access information such as group lists, timings (eg. for meetings, horse
trials, ceremonies, HT access, competition) and other critical information (eg. warm up
procedure).
16.5.1 Electronic means of communication may be used in addition to #16.5, but
online access must not be assumed.
16.6 A competitors' briefing should be held during the 24 hours prior to the start of
competition to advise all competitors of competition timings and other information and
to provide the opportunity to ask questions.
16.6.1 If there are local rules regarding safety or procedure that di fer from the
standard IHAA rules they must be clearly stated to competitors at this meeting. Eg.
competitors on the Hunt track must wear a rigid body/back protector, a single fall on
the Hunt track will require a rider to retire from the whole event (not just from the
current run), clarifying the number of warm-up runs if not the standard two (#9.2).
16.6.1.1 Organisers may request other procedural changes which are not
requirements of the IHAA rules, but if unless they are associated with safety they
